Episode 001
April 16 2026
CōLab Executive Creative Director Salih first met Arielle at Square, where she was Director of Retail Partnerships & Marketing Programs. She led big launches there, including the Square Stand, and built a reputation for making complex ideas simple. Since then, she's become a marketing leader at First Round Capital, partnering with early-stage startups to help them define who they are, what they sell, and why it matters.
Brian and Salih sat down with her to learn how she gets to positioning in hours not weeks, why she reduces marketing down to 3 critical tasks for startups, and the lessons she's taken from coaching 300+ companies over the past decade at First Round.
About the author
Arielle Jackson is the Head of Brand & Product Marketing at First Round Capital, where she's spent over a decade working with hundreds of founders on positioning, naming, identity, and launch communications, often starting when all they have is an "imagine if." She pitch hits as an early marketer until First Round companies have their own, finding the right language to scale their stories.
Before First Round, Arielle helped grow Gmail at Google, led launches at Square across 30,000 retail doors, and took a seed-stage startup called Cover to over one million users before it was acquired by Twitter. She's worked with companies including Patreon, Loom, and eero on their foundational messaging.
She holds an masters in psychology from Stanford and is more interested in what makes people tick than in attribution modeling.

Salih is an Executive Creative Director / Principal Motion Designer passionate about the blend of entertainment and technology. He enjoys creating a good old fashioned 30 second commercial but he also bridges the two halves of his career by bringing brand thinking into the way digital products move and feel. Even though Salih’s won awards, given talks, written articles, had Fast Company and Communication Arts write articles about him he keeps his process simple. He’s a “what if” kind of guy who loves doing dope work with interesting clients that have challenging problems.
Brian "Waka" Wakabayashi is the Managing Director of CōLab, a creative studio helping world-class founders and management teams design better brands, build better products, tell better stories, and make better decisions. We were founded in partnership with WestCap, a growth equity firm, to help portfolio companies and start ups scale to the next level through our key practice areas of brand, design, growth, product, and PR.
